FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“SnoValley 4 @ 60+ Conquer Mt Kilimanjaro”
Snoqualmie, Washington – December 22, 2010 – Kathy Burman, 60+, of Snoqualmie recently fulfilled her dream to climb to the summit of Kilimanjaro. This is one big mountain, 19,341 feet above sea level. Rising from the rolling plains in Tanzania, Kilimanjaro (Swahili for “shining mountain”) is a rugged 7 day journey from the heat of the plains to the oxygen thin, cold of Kili’s summit. Kilimanjaro is the worlds 4th most prominent, freestanding mountain rising 19,298 feet from the base.
Six years ago Kathy began her quest after hearing about friends who had made the journey and seeing the eye popping IMAX film called “Kilimanjaro, To the Roof of Africa”. It took her a while, but she got her “SnoValley4” team together. Kathy, Chris Pedee, Pat Person and Carol Dorney, all 60+ years young. They planned and prepared as best they could and asked Kathy to be the official photographer.
Si View Metro Parks, which serves the Snoqualmie Valley residents and offers “Photography Made Easy” classes taught by SnapShotSandy. Kathy wanted to improve her photography skills for the journey. “I was soon drawn into her dream and began to help her plan on how to capture what would end up being the images of those “once-in-a-lifetime” moments. Kathy was a quick learner and the proof is in the many fabulous photos she brought back from their African Adventure,” said Sandy.
Before she left, she researched new equipment, consulted with Sandy and finally decided that her current camera would meet her size, weight and quality needs just fine with a few hints to go along. “Take extra batteries, flash cards and hot packs to put in your camera case to keep the batteries from discharging in the cold weather as you climb Kili. Please make sure that you shoot with the flash when you get to the summit because the sun white clouds or snow will be behind the summit sign and cause the people and sign to be too dark”, Sandy offered.
Her dream came true at 4 pm, October 9th, 2010. The “SnoValley4” fulfilled Kathy’s dream by reaching Kili’s 19,341 foot summit. “It was the hardest thing I had ever done” said Kathy. When she came home she had Sandy help her assemble the photos into a Musical Video DVD. He was awestruck and “verklempt” as he wondered through the 1000 + photos of their African Adventure, which captured the Kili climb, Safari and Amsterdam R&R. Kathy did a wonderful job and was highly praised by Sandy for capturing the “Summit Moment”, and so much more for the SnoValley4. He is very proud of his student and says she has earned the title of SnapShotKathy.
“I am so glad our local newspaper had an advertisement for a Photography Made Easy class taught by SnapShotSandy (Sandy Horvath) through Si View Metro Parks. The timing was perfect and close to home. I have lived in Snoqualmie for many years and this is the first time I’d heard of a photography class in the valley. Sandy told me to go onto the Si View ’s website and sign up which was easy to navigate. We are very fortunate to have a community center with such a variety of classes. The classes were awesome and the facility, the new Snoqualmie City Hall, was great. Thanks for being there for me,” Kathy Burman
